Our dance teachers provide consistently excellent tuition in ballet, tap, theatre craft, freestyle and contemporary dance styles for students in Gateshead and across Tyne and Wear.

Miss Eve Trew MBE - our principal

Eve is a life member of the Royal Academy of Dance and a life member of the International Dance Teachers Association (IDTA). She is an international examiner and adjudicator and regularly travels throughout the UK and overseas. She was awarded the MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in 2010 for her services towards dance and the arts in the North East region.

The Eve Trew School of Dance was started by Eve in her mother’s front room in Gateshead on 21st September 1957 and she is looking forward to celebrating 60 wonderful years of dancing in 2017.

According to Eve, teaching children to dance is not a job, it is a special privilege as you come into contact with so many lovely families. We now have second and third generation children in our classes.

Since the school first began in 1957, Eve has always maintained that classes must be enjoyable in a safe and happy environment. The success of the school has been reflected in the number of students who have gone on to work in the world of dance and by the number of high end exam results achieved by all pupils. Currently Eve’s school is ranked in the top six IDTA schools in the UK for numbers of exams taken and passed.

Eve is proud of the dance school she has taken from her mother’s front room to the state-of-the-art educational facility it is today. She is also proud of the sums of money the school has raised for charities in the North East over many years.

Stephanie Smith

Stephanie Byrne
Dance & Musical Theatre

Stephanie’s passion for dance started at the age of 7 when she herself joined CATS Theatre School. As her love for the performing arts increased, she went on to begin dancing lessons at Eve Trew’s in ballet, tap, theatrecraft and modern.

As a pupil at the dance school, she was selected for various opportunities including a solo dance in our show, lead roles within the theatre school performances, two metro centre adverts, IDTA gala performances and local pantomimes. In her more senior teenage years, she was offered the opportunity to assist in class as a student teacher.

At the age of 18, she moved to Liverpool and completed professional training at Sir Paul McCartney’s Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts (LIPA), qualifying with a Diploma in Performing Arts: Dance. During this time she performed in various showcases as well as being selected as a dancer for BBC’S Liverpool Nativity.

In her early 20s, she returned to the Eve Trew School of Dance in order to complete her IDTA Associate Ballet, Freestyle and Street teaching qualifications. In addition she ventured into the fitness world qualifying in various programmes including Zumba, Piloxing and FitSteps.

She is a well-loved teacher at Eve Trew School of Dance where she takes classes in ballet, tap, theatrecraft, musical theatre, street dance and freestyle. She enjoys working with the children and encouraging them to strive for success. She has a passion for innovative choreography and has produced some excellent dance routines for recent shows. Her success in this area has resulted in the dance school being selected for four consecutive years to provide students to perform original routines in a show alongside “Strictly Come Dancing” stars Katya Virshillas and Pasha Kovalev.

Stephanie is truly committed to ensuring every class she teaches is educational, safe and most importantly fun. She feels it is a privilege to be able to help a child express themselves through dance and develop their confidence.
Natalie Halliwell

Natalie Halliwell - school manager

Natalie is Eve’s daughter and has been involved in dancing and theatre from a very young age. Whilst growing up in the North East, she was strongly involved in the school, taking lessons in ballet, tap, stage and modern until her late teens.

She moved away from the North East in 1990 to pursue her education and career. It was nearly 20 years before she returned to her roots and during her time away she had worked in several businesses in London, achieved 2 university degrees and had retrained and was working as a midwife in the South East of England.

After the birth of her first child in 2007 she decided to return to the North East and get involved with the running of the Dance School. Initially her role was administrative but, with her love of dance rekindled, she took steps to become involved in a teaching capacity. In 2010 she qualified as a Zumba instructor and taught regular adult dance fitness. In 2011 she completed her IDTA Associate Ballet teaching qualifications, which has enabled her to teach ballet within the school and, more recently, she qualified to teach FitSteps, a dance fitness class created by the stars of the BBC's Strictly Come Dancing series. This new class has proved to be a big hit with the ladies who attend.

Now mum to 2 boys, she is committed to ensuring that a visit to the Eve Trew School of Dance is a pleasurable experience for both the children and the accompanying parents.

Samantha Donaldson

Samantha Donaldson - dance teacher

She began training with an IDTA school in Nottingham at the age of four and has loved dancing ever since. She remained at this school into her late teens, taking regular lessons in ballet, tap, modern, stage, ballroom and freestyle and working up to her student teacher grades in both ballet and freestyle.

When her youngest daughter began classes at our school in 2009, Sam decided to become actively involved in the school herself by initially participating in ladies' classes before moving on to teach part-time. She has danced alongside the senior school troupe, taking part in performances with the stars of Strictly Come Dancing and at the school’s last 3 major dance shows at The Sage Gateshead in 2010, and the Newcastle Theatre Royal in 2013 and 2016.

Since the school moved into its beautiful new studios, she has taken a key role in the adult dance fitness classes, teaching the hugely popular new ballroom dancing based 'FitSteps' class, created by the Strictly Come Dancing dancers.

The Friends of the Eve Trew School of Dance is a committee run within the School consisting of mothers who have been associated with the School for many years through their children’s attendance.

Eve and the team of staff are very appreciative of the supportive work of the committee and for their efforts in helping to organise events such as our big bi-annual show, as well as taking financial responsibility for all the proceeds of our dance shows and other charity events.
